Prioritising Our Research
Our research focuses on many areas identified as important by patients themselves. In 2012 a major survey, The Sight Loss and Vision Priority Setting Partnership, overseen by the James Lind Alliance (a non-profit making initiative) and Fight for Sight (the UK’s largest vision research charity) brought together patients, carers and clinicians to identify and prioritise the top uncertainties and unanswered questions in vision loss research).
The survey, involving 2220 people, generated nearly 4,500 questions regarding more than 100 different eye conditions. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, ocular inflammatory diseases, retinal vascular disease and inherited retinal diseases were a few of the 12 categories subsequently devised from the findings.
Not surprisingly, patients would like improvements to current treatments, but they are also curious and optimistic about how future interventions, diagnostics and management strategies could make a genuine impact in preventing disease progression and even onset.
Our ongoing research is already addressing many of these questions and we are actively using the knowledge gained from this major survey to further guide its direction.
